DIY Hamster Seed Mix Guide for Bangladesh
Finding high-quality, commercial hamster food in Bangladesh can be a challenge. Many mixes found in online and local shops are not properly balanced. Either they are full of artificial colored cat food, way too much oil seed, sugary pellets, or lack the nutritional variety hamsters need to thrive. At HWBD, we advocate for a natural, biologically appropriate diet. We have formulated these 1 KG DIY seed mix recipes below specifically using ingredients you can find in local Bangladeshi markets like bird food shops.
Why Make Your Own Mix?

No artificial dyes or chemical preservatives. Just pure seeds, grains, and legumes, carefully balanced to provide natural protein, healthy fats, and essential nutrients.
Locally Sourced
Designed using 80% Farinaceous carbs/proteins and 20% healthy fats that can be easily found in local bazars where bird food can be found.
Cost-Effective
Buying individual seeds from the market in bulk is much cheaper both in long-term and short-term than importing commercial foods. It costs around 170-200 taka per KGs.

Where to Buy in Bangladesh
- Mudir Dokan (Local Grocery): Buy Pumpkin Seed, Mung Beans, Peanuts, Sesame, Coriander, and Black Seed here.
- Bird Markets (Katabon, Mirpur 1, etc.): Visit pigeon/bird feed sellers to easily find Oats, Wheat, Canary seed, Millet, Red Bajra, Safflower, Sunflower, and Buckwheat in bulk.
- Buy a Digital Scale: You should buy a cheap digital kitchen scale (often found on Daraz or Facebook for 300-350 BDT). Eyeballing the ingredients will ruin the nutritional balance!
Too much hassle?
How to Prepare & Store Your Mix
Ingredients bought from local shops/bazars often carry dust or harmless, but annoying, grain bugs. Follow these exact steps to ensure your hamster’s food is perfectly safe, balanced, and fresh.
Clean and Inspect
Before weighing, pick through all the locally sourced seeds. Remove any dust, tiny stones, twigs, or debris that are common in bazar feeds. Do not wash the seeds with water, as trapped moisture will cause dangerous mold.
Weigh Carefully
If you have a digital kitchen scale. Do not eyeball the amounts! The 80/20 ratio is crucial for your hamster's health. Measure each ingredient exactly as listed in the recipe to double check. You should be careful at weighting in the first place at the shop
Mix Thoroughly
Place all the weighed ingredients into a large, clean mixing bowl. Use your hands or a large spoon to toss everything thoroughly until the heavy grains and tiny seeds are evenly distributed.
The Freeze Treatment (Crucial!)
Transfer the fully mixed batch into a sealed Ziploc bag or plastic container and put it in your freezer for 48 to 72 hours. This safely kills any natural weevil (poka) eggs or grain moths hidden inside the seeds. Careful about making it wet.
Airtight Storage
fter freezing, let the mix return to room temperature. Wipe away any condensation on the outside of the bag. Store the food in an airtight glass jar or high-quality plastic container, keeping it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Don't Forget the Protein & Fresh Foods!
This DIY seed mix provides an excellent and natural foundation for your hamster’s health, but remember: hamsters are omnivores! To complete their diet and ensure they thrive, you must supplement this dry mix with high-quality animal protein (like dried mealworms, crickets, or plain boiled egg whites) and appropriate portions of safe, fresh vegetables.
