The pet trade often treats hamsters as disposable toys, leading to widespread misunderstanding about their actual needs. At HWBD, we are working to change that narrative. We believe that every hamster deserves a life free from stress, tiny cages, and improper diets.
Our focus is entirely on rescuing hamsters from neglectful situations, providing them with safe foster environments, and carefully matching them with vetted, responsible families. By choosing to adopt, you are saving a life and making a stand against unethical breeding.
What We Do
🏡 Rescue & Foster
The safest, cheapest, and most effective way to keep a hamster warm is giving them handfuls of plain, unscented, white toilet paper. Shred it into strips and pile it in their enclosure. They will eagerly carry it to their hide and build a thick, heavily insulated nest that traps their body heat perfectly.
Deep Bedding for Burrowing
In the wild, hamsters survive the cold by burrowing deep underground. Ensure your enclosure has a minimum of 6 to 8 inches (preferably 10+ inches) of safe paper or aspen bedding. The deeper the bedding, the better they can insulate themselves from the cold room air.
Safe Ambient Room Heating
If your room gets freezing at night, use an oil-filled radiator or a ceramic space heater to warm the entire room to a safe temperature (around 20°C – 23°C). Never point a space heater directly at the hamster cage, as this can quickly cause overheating or melt plastic bins.

When emergencies strike, time is critical. We provide an active directory of trusted, exotic-savvy veterinarians and host essential first-aid resources to help owners handle health crises effectively.

Ethical care is at the heart of everything we do. We actively advocate against harmful products sold in local pet shops, such as dangerous wire wheels, tiny critter trails, and unsafe bedding. Through education and community support, we empower owners to create enriching, naturalistic environments where their hamsters can truly thrive.
